About the Project

The Safe Roads Alliance was established by the New Zealand government in 2015 to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on high risk rural state highways. The safety improvements implemented between Pakipaki and Waipukurau included wider road shoulders, drainage improvements, slow vehicle bay, and safety barrier making this section of highway more forgiving of human error and reducing the chance of people dying or being seriously injured in a crash.

Site-specific TTM plans were developed for each site. Queue length, delay times and speed compliance was constantly monitored. Site-Specific Safety Plans and Safe Working Method statements were in place for all works. Daily risk assessments occurred prior to work commencing.

Russell Roads self-performed 99% of the contract works with internal resources, including all earthworks, retaining walls, drainage, barrier, stabilisation, landscaping, pavement construction, surfacing and traffic management. Subcontractors were engaged to complete survey, fencing, linemarking and hydro excavation.
